Activities
Waiotahi Beach is perfectly located for a holiday! It is remote enough that oftentimes
it is possible to have the beach entirely to yourself to enjoy the sand, surf,
views over White & Whale Island, and stunning sunsets. If you prefer a more
active holiday there is an abundance of cafes/restaurants, leisure and adventure
activites, sightseeing and daytrip options easily accessible - some of which
are listed below.
Waiotahi
Beach is one of the
safest beaches in the region. Patrolled by the
local surf club during the summer the gentle
beach is great for swimming, body surfing and
surfing when conditions are right.
Kayaking and
Whitewater kayaking is popular on the Motu and
Waioeka rivers. Sea kayaking is also a fun way
of getting your long line out to sea. Kayaks (and
lifejackets?) are available for hire from the camp
office.
Fishing -
Surfcasting directly off Waiotahi beach yields
snapper all year round. For game fisherman the
waters off Waiotahi and around White Island are
regarded as the best Tuna fishing grounds in
New Zealand. The back country rivers in the area
also offer exceptional trout fishing. Local guides
and charter boats are the best way to find your
own favourite spot. Contact camp managers Deb
& Anthony (rud) Rudkin.
Hunting -
The Urewera’s and Raukumara’s hold
large populations of Red Deer, Wild Boar and goats.
Once again local guides are the best way to discover
this country.

Whitewater
Rafting -
on the mighty Motu River is legendary. Options
range from 5 day guided trips to day trips depending
on your appetite for adrenaline. Family groups
find the Waioeka River more appealing for fun packed
3 hour trips.
Bush Walking -
numerous trails wind
their way through the Urewera and Raukumara mountain
ranges that border Opotiki.
Mountain
biking -
the Opotiki region has some of the best mountain
biking in New Zealand. The quiet country roads
that lead into the hills are perfect for cruising
while bush tracks and coastal routes provide thrill
seekers with danger and speed.
Horse
Riding -
beach and bush riding are popular in the Opotiki
region, which also happens to be the Rodeo capital
of New Zealand.www.readyrockhome.com/
